Digital photography offers two distinct advantages over traditional photography; captured images can be evaluated immediately and re-shot if necessary, and once captured, the quality of the image can be maximized through digital post processing.
Digital photography is also at the foundation of many new two and three dimensional documentary techniques. Digital photography not only provides the digital equivalent of traditional film based photographic images, but also captures the information used to create Panorama's, Object movies, polynomial texture maps (PTM's), and true geometric 3D Imaging. A solid understanding of digital photographic techniques is the pre-requisite for many advanced documentary methods.

Object Movies
Object movies enable an object to be viewed from all sides. They are made from multiple digital photographs taken from different positions around the subject. This process delivers the subject in an interactive viewer allowing it to be rotated and zoomed. Object movies may be incorporated with panoramas, 3D geometric objects, and other content into complex multimedia environments.
For many purposes, the information from this form of visual inspection is superior to traditional 2D drawings and photographs. When objects are examined in the "real world" people pick them up in their hands and turn them around, or in the case of larger objects, move around them. The examiner may use a magnifying glass or go in closer for a better look to see greater detail. By incorporating these types of activities into the viewing experience, object movies communicate a subject's spatial characteristics in a natural, intuitive way.
Object movies are an efficient and cost effective documentary tool. They convey much of a subjects 3D information while requiring only a fraction of the time, equipment, and operator skill necessary to build an equivalent 3D geometric object.
In educational settings, an object movie's interactivity, as with interactive media generally, involves learners with the subject both mentally and physically, enhancing attention span and learning. This makes object movies ideal content for digital coursework, web content, collection catalogues, and onsite displays in cultural heritage organizations.
